Holyport 2 v 2 Wantage Town
Holyport continued their recent unbeaten run with a spirited comeback from two nil to secure a much deserved point at home to Wantage Town. A stiff breeze was blowing across the Summerleaze pitch which as against Shrivenham meant an untidy game of football. Holyport started with a front two of Wright and Handscomb as against Thame and it was Wright who had a goal disallowed in one of Ports first forays into the Wantage box. With the breeze making crosses difficult to deal with Carter who was back in goal for Port had to deal with several early corners from Wantage. From a set piece it was Wantage who took the lead in the 20th minute. Butler’s perfectly flighted free kick was met unchallenged by Claydon, whose header hit the back of the net.
The game continued to become a messy affair with neither side gaining any real control. Holyport should have equalised after 35 minutes when Jamie Wright was well placed. Another chance then fell to Dan Rapley but the Wantage keeper saved well. Just before the half time whistle Wantage had a good chance to extend their lead but the shot was put wide.
The second half brought better football from both sides as the wind died. Wantage extended their lead on 46 minutes as a weak back pass was intercepted by Wantage's Claydon, guiding the ball past Carter to make it 2-0. Holyport responded well and Jamie Handscomb pulled a goal back for the homeside in the 49th minute, Handscomb showed great composure and got a goal that his performance deserved.
Pressing for the equaliser Sweetman threw on new signing Lee Hawkins, and with 3 minutes he had brought Port level. Spotting the Wantage keeper off his line Hawkins hit a lovely 25 yard lob that brought Holyport level. Both sides pressed for the winner and both sides had chances but a draw was a fair result for both sides.
