Match Report Holyport FC

Holyport FC 2 v 1 Kidlington
Half time – 2 v 0
Holyport Scorers (James Flint 7 & Dan Rapley 49)

Holyport started this game with some real intent to put pay to Saturday’s poor FA Cup display behind them and claim their first Uhlsport Hellenic League points.

During the first five minutes it was all Holyport as they found their passing game and kept Kidlington on the back foot.  Then on 7 minutes Jamie Handscomb collected a cleared free kick and whipped in a great cross for James Flint to score with a great diving header.

This shocked Kidlington into playing some football and for the next five minutes they got the ball down and started to play some good one touch football but they never threatened Carter in Ports goal.

On 18 minutes after a good cut back from Rapley, Jamie Wright clipped a effort just wide of the post with the Kidlington keeper beaten, Rapley then also had a goal bound effort blocked by a last ditch tackle.

Holyport were playing very well and closing down Kidlington to stop them playing.  Another Rapley break away nearly lead to the second goal, a fine curling effort was finger tipped wide with the Kidlington keeper at full stretch.

As Holyport continued to look dangerous the second goal they deserved just wouldn’t come, Handscomb crashed one against the bar on 29 minutes from 25 yards out with the keeper stranded.

In the 43rd minute the much awaited second goal arrived after Handscomb beat the keeper to a cross and Jamie Wright volleyed home, only for the referee to disallow the goal for an infringement on the keeper.

Carter was finally called into making a save as his palmed away a 45th minute strike from 20 yards out.

The second half started with Kidlington fired up to get back into the game and they started the brighter of the two sides. Pressing Port back and forcing Carter into a save from a narrow angle.

Holyport then won a penalty for a handball as Wright’s volleyed attempt was handled on the six yard line.  Dan Rapley stepped up and dispatched the penalty to give Port a much deserved 2-0 lead in the 49th minute.

The game opened up from this minute on as Kidlington pushed men forward and Holyport played on the counter.  In truth neither side really created any chances as the clocked ticked down.
Then in the 74th minute a hopeful long ball evaded the Port back four and the Kidlington forward nipped in to lob Carter.  From a comfortable position Holyport had a nervous 15 minutes to see out.

With the last kick off the game a Kidlington free kick deflected off a Port player and it narrowly went wide.

The whistle went and Holyport deserved their first win of the season.
