Berks & Bucks Senior Cup – Round 2
Tuesday 15th November 2011
Holyport 2 v 1 Aylesbury United
HT – Holyport 1 v 1 Aylesbury United
Holyport: Stuart Bulter (1) & Steve Deverall (62)
Aylesbury United: Stacey Field (3)

The game got off to an explosive start when Stuart Butler gave Holyport the lead after 37 seconds.  In the first attack of the game a Handscomb flick on found Butler 8 yards out and he coolly passed the ball into the back of the net.

Aylesbury responded well and had a few minutes of keep ball that led to a throw in.  The throw found Edgeworth who managed to cross for Aylesbury, after not clearing their lines the ball fell to Field who curled home from 8 yards out to level after 3 minutes.

Aylesbury continued to have the better of the opening exchanges but Holyport dug in and showed a great spirit.  Carter had two shots from distance to save during this spell.  The returning James Flint was coming into the game and starting to win the important 50/50 balls with Coull alongside him.

In the 12th minute Handscomb released Deverall down the Port’s left and his cross found Jerrum who volleyed against the post.  After this frantic start the game started to slow down and Carter was called into action again as a Port clearance was charged down and the loose ball saw the Aylesbury forward through one on one but Carter saved well.

On 25 minutes Handscomb headed to Butler who made space and fired just wide.  Both sides continued to look for openings but it took until the 44th minute for the next chance to come along.  An Aylesbury free kick was fired into the wall and somehow the Aylesbury forward got through one on one, his first effort was saved by Carter and then Carter saved the follow up to keep the scores at 1-1 going in at half time.

Aylesbury would have felt that they deserved a lead at half time.

The first few minutes of the second half started with ‘The Ducks’ on top, a cross managed to go across Holyport’s goal with everyone missing it, then Carter saved a shot  low to his left.

From this moment on Holyport found a foot hold in the game, the midfield and wide men started to have a dominant spell.  Butler released Deverall with a through ball and he made no mistake shooting into the bottom corner past the onrushing keeper on 62 minutes.

With their tails up Port continued to come forward and Butler had a shot saved by the goalkeeper’s legs.  In the 68th minute a cross was half cleared by the Aylesbury keeper, stranded off his line Deveralls attempted lob landed on the roof of the net.  Holyports pressure continued and a great run to the byline by Jerrum saw his cut back find Butler unmarked 10 yards out.

Unfortunately unlike his first goal this time he shot over.  With 15 minutes left Holyport back line of Bailey, Ovens, Heywood, Sturgess and Carter  saw out the game well and reduced Aylesbury to a series of corners and free kicks.

On the second half spell Holyport deserved the victory.  Manager Sweetman will be delighted with the response after Saturdays defeat and the side must take this attitude forward to the next game.
