Match Report Holyport FC

Uhlsport Hellenic Premier
18th October 2011
Holyport 0 v 1 Abingdon Town
Half Time – 0 v 0
Abingdon Town Scorer: Mark Janes

After the impressive performance away to Shortwood United on Saturday the Holyport faithful were looking for another performance along those lines.  The game started at a slow pace as both sides were looking to pass the ball around but the passages of play kept breaking down.

Holyports first chance came from a Handscomb header which was headed wide after Jerrum had picked him out with a cross.  Ports Carter then saved comfortably from the Abingdon forward who hit a low effort from 20 yards out.  Holyport then hit the bar twice in two minutes, firstly a Handscomb cross was left by the Abbott’s keeper and then Jerrum found Driver who crashed his header against the cross bar.

Abingdon’s best chance came in the twenty first minute.  The forward hit a fierce drive from 18 yards and Carter palmed well away to safety.  Carter had to be alert again on twenty five minutes as deflected free kick had to be tipped around the post.

As the half came to a conclusion Holyport were starting to get some more joy on the flanks and on thirty eight minutes Rapley crossed for Driver who put his header wide.  The half time whistle came with a draw a fair reflection.

Holyport started the second half with a much more determined mood and Driver burst through on forty six minutes and shot wide.  Rapley then had a curling effort saved on forty eight minutes.  Abingdon were not having much joy and were only looking dangerous from set pieces.

On sixty five minutes Driver was hacked down and Handscomb stepped up to take the free kick.  With the keeper well beaten the ball smashed against the bar.  It was Handscomb again three minutes later who met a Jerrum cross only to head straight to the keeper.

After seventy minutes Abingdon had their first shot of the second half but Carter saved easily.  Holyports best chance of the game came on seventy four minutes as Driver released Handscomb but his effort was saved again by the Abbott’s keeper.

On seventy five minutes Deverall and Flint replaced Jeffries and Rapley.  Deverall made an immediate impact bursting down the left and crossing for Handsomb who headed wide.  With the clock ticking down and a 0 – 0 looking on the cards Driver put Handscomb through who rounded the keeper but with the narrow angle shot wide.

With ninety on the watch Abingdon had one last corner.  This was over hit and Mark Janes collected the loose ball and hit a hopeful cross which somehow found its way into the Ports goal.

Holyport as always kept going and in injury time Flint headed over from a Deverall cross when well placed.

It was just one of those nights for Holyport who on another evening would have scored three or four goals.  But with only one point from their last nine they must win at Cheltenham on Saturday.
