HT Ascot United 1 v 2 Holyport

A Game Of Two Halves...

Holyport could not have had a worse start to the game as they conceded another weak goal to Ascot in the first minute. Newly transferred Greg Stokes hardly had to jump as he headed home a free kick from the left hand side.

The half from this moment on was all Holyport as they played some good football and caused Ascot many problems. Deverall crossed for the on rushing Sturgess who had made a 40 yard one into the box.  Sturgess coolly volleyed home past the planted Collis in Ascots goal with a great finish in the 7thminute.

Holyport continued to press and Deverall crashed a volley goal bound but for it hitting an Ascot defender it would have been 2-1 after 12 minutes. After 23 minutes a Jeffries free kick was slotted home by Dan Bailey to give Port the lead. The Ascot keeper claimed for a free kick but he had timed his jump wrong.

Handscomb continued to cause 'The Yellaman' problems and he crossed for Deverall who put his chance wide from 3 yards as the Ascot defender slid in to challenge after 35 minutes.

Deverall was then put through by a mis placed pass by Ascot only to be dragged back by the Ascot 5 who was lucky to stay on the pitch.

The second could not have been any worse for Holyport as they were undone by the Jon Bennett show. After just 9 minutes of the second half a simple knock down from an Ascot free kick found Bennett who tapped home – Holyport were caught ball watching rather than staying with their man.

5 minutes later and a good move down Ascots left saw the ball make its way across to the right hand side and Chris Firrelly hit a pure volley past Carter to give Ascot a 3-2 lead.

Holyport still looked dangerous when they got into Ascots half and Handscomb released Jerrum who dragged his shot wide after 64 minutes. Straight from the goal kick Ascot scored a simple flick on was latched onto by Bennett and he made no mistake to make it 4-2.

Three minutes later and Carter had to save another Ascot shot as they grew in confidence. On the 70th minute Bennett was given aches of room to turn which he did and then beat his man to score his third of the game.

Holyport continued to press forward and Jamie Wright was hauled down in the 82ndminute and Handcomb scored the resulting penalty to make it 5-3.

Handscomb and Deverall then linked up to see Deverall through and only 6 yards out.  Rapley was placed to his right with an open goal but Deverall decided to shoot and blazed over.

In injury time Bennett once again latched on to a flick on and scored his 4th of the game to make it 6-3.

The worry for Holyport is the lack of fight and spirit they have when they go a goal or two down and the constant team defensive frailties that are evident game after game.

Team, Carter, Rapley, Britnel (Wright), Bailey, Rolfe, Jeffries (Coull), Sturgess, Deverall, Jerrum, Handscomb ©, Butler
